After two coastal events the SuperGP Champions Trophy returns inland for the final round of the 2016 season on Saturday, 29 October at Red Star Raceway outside Delmas.
Clint Seller (Neolife Yamaha R1) kept his chances of taking another SuperGP title alive with two wins last time out at Dezzi Raceway but Mathew Scholtz (ETR Nashua Yamaha R1) added to his tally of 2016 podium finishes with two second places on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast to limit the damage. Scholtz, who will be competing in the AMA series in the United States next year, has a 29-point lead over Seller and a win in the opening race at Red Star will give him the 2016 title. Michael White (Consortium Shipping Yamaha R1), currently third on the championship log, had two podium finishes last time the series visited Red Star and will be a threat.
Greg Gildenhuys (Kreepy Krauly Kawasaki ZX10-R), veteran Lance Isaacs (LIR Motorrad BMW S1000RR) and Brent Harran, who seems to have got to grips with his new MVC Marketing Yamaha R1, round out the top six and are among a number of riders who could challenge the leading trio.
The SuperMasters Interprovincial challenge has already gone the way of Isaacs, who has won every race this season. Damon Purificati (Amalgam Welding Shop Kawasaki ZX10-R) has secured the runners up spot while Etienne Nelson (BMW S1000RR), Johnny Krieger (BMW S1000RR) and Hendrik de Bruin (Yamaha R1) are fighting it out for third.
Adolf Boshoff (Neolife Yamaha R6) wrapped up the 2016 Super600 title at Dezzi Raceway but he will still be looking for more wins. Blaze Baker (Uncle Andy Racing Suzuki GSXR 600) has improved as the season has progressed will be looking to add to his tally of victories in the 2016 season while securing the runner’s up spot in the championship. Steven Odendaal, who recently claimed the 2016 European Moto2 championship, is likely to be back and will almost certainly be very close to the head of the field.
Malcolm Rudman (Kawasaki ZX6) had a superb outing at Dezzi Raceway and could be up with the leaders as could Dylan Barnard (Kawasaki ZX6) and Kewyn Snyman (Inex Construction Kawasaki ZX6).
After two wins last time out Aiden Liebenberg needs just one third place to secure the 2016 SuperJunior crown. The only rider with a theoretical chance of stopping him is Brandon Staffen but mechanical maladies at a couple of rounds in the middle of the season have left the Capetonian’s title aspirations largely out of his hands. A trio of riders are in the mix for third place in the championship. CJ Hackart holds the advantage at the moment but with only eight points separating him, Tyreece Robert and Dominic Doyle it is too close to call.
The national categories will be supported a full program of regional categories. Practice and qualifying take place on Friday, 28 October with racing getting underway at 10h05 on Saturday, 29 October.
As has been the case at all of the SuperGP events this year, the Tin Run Tour, an initiative that helps charities in the area of the circuit by collecting donations of tinned food, will be in action again. Spectators can assist this worthy cause by bringing tins of food to the circuit. In exchange, those who arrive before 10h00 on race day will be granted free admission to the circuit.
